A Bristol hospice is blooming with pride after achieving a prestigious gold award in the Bristol in Bloom 'Garden for Bristol 2013' competition.
St Peter's Hospice
St Peter's Hospice in Brentry was awarded the third place prize in the Commercial Business category.
Bristol in Bloom judge Monica Whyte said: "St Peter's Hospice has entered the awards for a number of years now and I have been interested to see how the garden has been developed and improved over that time. This year their Gold Award is richly deserved.
"The serenity of the garden is wonderful; it's a lovely space to be in and I imagine the patients and families take a lot of comfort from it."
Bristol in Bloom is a community initiative which aims to bring flowers and colour to the city. In partnership with public and private sector organisations, it promotes care of the environment and pride in Bristol.
Gardener and maintenance manager at St Peter's Hospice, Sarah Townsend, said the award means a lot to the staff, volunteers and patients who enjoy the garden.
She said: "It's fantastic news that St Peter's Hospice has achieved a Gold Award from Bristol in Bloom. The great summer weather has helped but it's also down to the hard work and dedication of our volunteers.
"The gardens within the hospice grounds mean so much to both patients and their families who are able to enjoy them when they visit.
"To be awarded this prize is a great boost for all the hard work myself and the team put in to make the grounds look as beautiful and welcoming as possible.
"I'd also like to thank our corporate sponsors and all those who spur us on by saying how nice the gardens or a particular plant looks."
Now in its 35th anniversary year, St Peter's Hospice cares for more than 2,670 patients each year as well as supporting family members. It costs £6.8 million to run the hospice with 77% of that coming from the generosity of public support.
