Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without the traditional outing to the theatre or cinema and this year their are plenty of seasonal offerings on your doorstep.

If battling your way through the crowds of last-minute Christmas shoppers to get to the Hippodrome to see 'The Hoff' in Peter Pan isn't your idea of fun, then stay local and check out some of the festive-themed goodies closer to home.

The Wardrobe Theatre opened its doors above the White Bear on St Michael's Hill earlier this year and has quickly established itself, alongside Clifton's Alma Tavern, as being a priceless small pub theatre.

With a capacity of at the most 50 people, it's an intimate venue, and for the festive season organisers Chris Collier, Jesse Meadows and Jesse Jones are putting on 'Home Alonely' - a reworking of the modern Christmas classic starring Macaulay Culkin.

It runs 7th-8th, 10th-15th and 18th December.

Or if you prefer a family trip to the cinema - The Orpheus, in Northumbria Drive, Henleaze, one of the few remaining independents, have screenings of Arthur Christmas, Puss In Boots and Happy Feet 2. More info here: http://bristol.scottcinemas.co.uk/information/ and it won't break the bank unlike a trip to some of the mainstream cinemas, another reason to keep it local!
