A cyclist suffered a serious injury after a collision involving a lorry in Redland, Bristol.

Police are appealing for information following the incident, which occurred at around 10am on on Friday (December 9) on Kellaway Avenue at the junction with Bishop Road. The female cyclist was taken to hospital with a serious leg injury. Anyone who may have witnessed this collision is asked to call police on the non-emergency number 101.

A Bristol cyclist was seriously injured in a collision with a lorry in Redland last week - raising more concerns about road safety in the area. The Bristol Evening Post reported that the female cyclist was taken to hospital with serious leg injuries after an incident at the Bishop Road junction of Kellaway Avenue last Friday morning.

Redland is full of cyclists on a morning as well as cars, motorbikes and the odd lorry or two and every now and then something like this happens. As unfortunate as it is for the cyclist and sometimes, the driver involved, it does prove as an important wake up call to the scores of motorists and cyclists who take risks every day.

This article is in no way designed to pass judgement or speculate on the nature of the aforementioned accident - as the police are still investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call 101. But we're using it to spark another discussion on road safety in Redland, Bristol.

Some drivers can be really inconsiderate when it comes to cyclists in Redland. They stop at lights right next to the kerb so cyclists can't get past, they park in the cycle area at the front of traffic lights and they don't take any care when passing puddles. They also completely ignore the think once, think twice, think bike initiative and there has been many a time I've seen a car turn into a junction into the path of an oncoming bike.

Then there are also problems with some cyclists disobeying the rules of the road - jumping red lights, cycling side by side with a friend, riding on the pavement, not having lights. I've previously written about the whole issue of jumping red lights on here and it sparked a fierce debate about whether that was hazardous or not. The militant cyclist contingent felt it wasn't a problem as cyclists had a better view of oncoming traffic - whereas many motorist said that was rubbish and it posed a real danger to all road users.

What is seriously lacking in Redland, Bristol and beyond is substantial policing of the city's roads. There's no real deterrent for people flouting the Highway Code and related rules and it isn't until a tragic accident like this that people realise the full dangers of the road for cyclists, motorists and pedestrians alike.

So what do you think? Are we being too harsh on road users in Redland? Is it only a handful of people causing a problem? Or is it more widespread? We'd love to hear about your experiences...

What about a cycling proficiency test for all road cyclists as standard? I reckon not enough of them know how to use the roads safely, and as for the ones who use the pavement..they are never brought to account!
