Election Day in Redland, Bristol
Over 96,000 letters reminding people to complete, sign and return their electoral registration forms will be sent out next week - September 26, 2011. "ÂThe reminders are part of the council's annual canvass of households, which aims to ensure every eligible adult who is entitled to vote is on the electoral roll.
"In Bristol, an estimated 320,000 adults are eligible to vote," says Yvonne Dawes, Bristol's Statutory Services Manager. "So far, 93,000 registration forms have been returned, that means thousands of people could be missing out on their democratic right to vote. The recent Southmead by-election demonstrates the importance of being on the electoral roll as elections can be called at short notice, and if you're not registered, you won't be able to vote. Our reminders are another chance for those who haven't already done so - to complete their forms and register. Registration is easy and help is available if anyone is unsure about completing the form."
The forms should be completed with the names of those adults eligible to vote, including teenagers currently aged 16 and 17. "The closing date for registration in time to be included in the 2011 register is November 25. The register will be published on December 1, 2011.
