Last week it was the turn of 18 year olds to open their exam results

and discover whether they had got the grades needed to go to University. This
week, it’s their younger counterparts who learn whether they have passed their
GCSEs and can go on to do A-Levels or college courses.
Once more, Redland schools were bound to do well in the results tables.
Students at Redland High School for Girls have
achieved almost 30% of their passes (pass rate of 100%) at the new A* grade –
28.8% to be precise! In this highly competitive year, it is especially
pleasing that Redland High students will be going to the universities of their
first choice.
48 candidates took their A2 levels at Redland High
School this year and 4 girls have achieved 3 A* grades.
For the first time this year, 3 students at RHS took
the Extended Project Qualification, to great effect, with two achieving A
grades and one candidate gaining the coveted A*. These EPQs count as ½ an A
Level and are of real interest to universities as they require in-depth study
of a subject of interest to the candidate; they often relate directly to the
subject candidates wish to study at university. Our students' projects were on:
equine laminitis, the environmental impact of dams and the clinical
applications of monoclonal antibodies. The EPQ has definitely made a difference
to offers being made to RHS students for very competitive courses. For 2010, 20
Redland High Sixth Form students have signed up for the EPQ.
Mrs Caroline Bateson, Headmistress of Redland High,
said "We are celebrating the tremendous success of our students. This
year, we knew that to get an A* students would have to score an A overall with
at least 90% in each paper in the second year of the course, which is setting
the bar very high. Our results, with almost 30% of all our passes, achieving
the A* grade, prove that the teaching here is of the very highest quality and I
congratulate my staff as well as our students.”
GCSE Results were the highest for 5 years with the
overall pass rate (A*-C) at 99%. 100% of our students achieved at least 8
A*-C passes! 27.4% of our GCSE candidates achieved all their passes at A*
or A grades which is a terrific performance. Three students achieved all
A* grades.
Mrs Bateson said, "We are still in a mood of
celebration following last week's A Level results in which, at 28.8%, we
achieved the highest level of A* grades in the whole city of Bristol. Now
we have even more to celebrate as our GCSE candidates have acquitted themselves
with such credit."
Another great time to have kids at schools in Redland then.
