Thousands of people in Redland and Bristol will head to the ballot boxes to vote whether they want to see a change in the electoral system - from the current First Past The Post method to an Alternative Vote (AV) method. See previous article for more info on this. Or visit www.aboutmyvote.co.uk

The ballot paper is a straightforward question along the lines of: At present the UK uses the First Past The Post System, should the Alternative Vote system be used instead? The answer options are ‘yes’ or ‘no’. You must put a cross next to the option you want, you must not write ‘yes’ or ‘no’ on your ballot paper as that would spoil the paper (despite what it looks like on some of the newspaper’s front pages today). You can, of course, abstain from voting but this may be interpreted as apathy.

Finally, you could deliberately spoil your ballot paper by scribbling on it, writing on it, or even drawing on it. You may ask why you’d want to do this, but if you agree with the principle of democracy but aren’t happy with the options given in this referendum then this may be the most appealing option for you.

Polling stations are situated across Redland (see list below) and Bristol and are open from 7am until 10pm today, May 5. The count will take place tomorrow afternoon with the result announced after that, hopefully before the end of the week.

So what are you waiting for, go forth and take advantage of your democratic right to vote! Or tell us why you won’t be voting in this AV referendum, which is only the second ever referendum offered to UK voters...
