Sustainable Redland success!

A strongly worded objection by Sustainable Redland to Bristol City Council has helped see plans for a new incinerator in Avonmouth rejected.

The Redland-based eco-group strongly opposed the plans saying they would be detrimental to the area.

And now it seems councillors have taken on board theirs and others objections and refused permission for the ambitious build.

The council’s Development Control committee went against the recommendation of council officers, who had suggested granting permission to Viridor Waste Management.

The news, which came out of a council meeting last week, was welcomed by all campaigners involved in the protest against the plans, which would have tackled 300,000 tonnes of waste every year.

But there are some who argue that this kind of facility is needed and if it’s not built in Avomouth then it will just get built elsewhere in the Bristol area.

What do you think? Is this all a bit NIMBYish? Do we need to wise up and come to a compromise over where the site will be?

And do you think Sustainable Redland should be commenting on issues in Avonmouth?
