city, the outskirts can prove a little less welcoming. This is exemplified by

the recent assault of a 33-year old in Montpelier.

The man was walking home shortly after midnight on Saturday

(July 17) when he was attacked by a group of ‘youths’.

Police are now appealing for witnesses. A police spokesman said:

“The incident occurred outside Bath Buildings, Montpelier, Bristol. The victim was

walking home when he saw a group of 4-5 youths sat on a wall near to the Old

England pub and Montpelier Health Centre who were drinking alcohol.

One male from this group shouted 'Get Him' to the

victim who tried to run away.

This person chased the victim down the road and

hit him over the head with a bottle. The victim was then kicked in the face

resulted in his nose being broken and him requiring eight stitches.

PC Andrew Smetham said: "This was a

particularly nasty unprovoked attack. We believe a number of youths were in the

area at the time and witnessed this incident. I would urge them to come forward

and talk to us. Any information will be taken seriously and could help us bring

the offender responsible to justice."

I hate to tarnish all groups of ‘youths’ with the same brush but

when incidents like this happen you cannot help but be wary when you see a

gaggle of kids like that. There was a time when all it would’ve taken was a

stiff word from an adult to deter them from causing trouble but now you dare

not even make eye contact in case they’re carrying a blade.

There’s no short sharp answer to this

problem but you bet your bottom dollar you can trace it back to the families.

Here’s hoping the victim makes a speedy full recovery and the culprits get

caught. There really is no need for such mindless violence. Cowards - the lot

of them!

Anyone with any information should contact police

at Trinity Road on 0845 456 7000 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Fair point anders24. I only said outskirts cos it's across the other side of Cheltenham Road and on the street maps Redland / Montpelier / St Andrews / Kingsdown and Bishopston exist to cover part of the BS6 area each. Didn't mean to start a turf argument! It does have a different vibe to the affluent centre of Redland but it has it's plus sides too. In fact I've just moved from the Whiteladies side of Redland to the Gloucester Road side and I could not be happier...you've inspired my next article!

It is a bit less welcoming than the middle of Redland, which is an extremely safe and affluent area.

The point was Montpelier isn't 'the outskirts' and the article seemed to tar all 'outskirts' with the same brush - I wouldn't say (from following local news for a number years) that there seem to be any more violent incidents towards the edge of the city than in the centre and nearby areas.

Montpelier is a bit less welcoming than the middle of Redland though. I'd feel happy walking down Zetland Road or Archfield Road as a woman on my own at night but you wouldn't catch me doing that on the road up to Montpelier station or by Bath buildings. No way.

Also, while Bristol has its problems in certain areas (the same as any city), I'm not sure 'the outskirts' will appreciate being labelled 'a little less welcoming'. Incidents like this can happen anywhere in a city and I would say the centre of town (especially at weekends) is where most violent incidents occur.
