Every now and again councils and other public organisations (as well as some of our sister Local People sites, including Clifton People) launch awards to help recognise those local heroes who really make a difference to their community.

International Women's Day
The latest in the series are Bristol City Council’s Women Who Make a Difference Awards 2011. This year’s annual awards, which take place next month, also celebrate the 100th Anniversary of International Women’s Day. The council says it already has 40 nominations but is looking for more so do you know anyone in Redland worthy of the accolade? A Scout leader? School teacher? Lollipop lady? Shop assistant? Anyone who you feel really adds something to their community.
Councillor Barbara Janke, Leader of Bristol City Council, said: “As in previous years, International Women’s Day and the annual Women who make a Difference Awards offer opportunities for acknowledging the contribution of women to the life of Bristol in communities across the city and in all walks of life.”
Margaret Grey, co-Chair of the Bristol Woman’s Forum added: “Many of the people who have submitted nominations have said how their ‘women who make a difference’ have supported them and others and are very positive role models in their communities. The Bristol Women’s Forum consider this Award very important as it enables local women to receive recognition for their contribution to their community.”
The awards, which will be presented by Councillor Clare Campion-Smith, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, on Thursday, March 3, 2011, from 2.00pm until 4.00 pm at the Council House, College Green, Bristol.
