first anniversary this week.

When Woolworths went bust it left

holes in High Streets up and down the country and Whiteladies Road was no

different. The once popular shop lay empty for months leaving people wondering

what would replace it. Then in a stroke of genius, it was turned into a vibrant

indoor market. It seems like only yesterday we were introduced to a wonderful

array of stalls – from flowers to bread and vintage clothes to handmade

jewellery it had so much more to offer than Woolworths ever did and now it’s

about to pass the year milestone.

In celebration of this first birthday

on Friday, Woolies Indoor Market will open until 8.30pm that day (November 12).

A spokesman for Woolies Indoor Market

said: “Launched in November last year, Woolies was

born in the height of the recession.  It is a

high class market at the top of Whiteladies Road that has taken Independent

trading to another level.  It has shown that the appetite to

start new a business has reached new heights.

One facet of the market which is creating quite a stir is 'The Loft' a

place which never ceases to amaze people on discovery.  There is an

eclectic mix of creative people who are developing the market: A vintage market

launched in October to be held the first Saturday of every month is very

popular as is the lofts internet cafe. The market is a microcosm of the wider

economy.”

So what do you think? Is this where the future lies? Collaborations

of smaller businesses? Or perhaps you’d prefer to have the old Woolworths back?

I know which I prefer mind...go Woolies Indoor Market!

this is great i never even knew it was open. but even still i think shoppers miss Woolworths, even more so at christmas time when they did some fantastic 3-4-2 offers. but i guess companies like tescos home and asdas are cashing in on the toy sector alot more since woolworths went under. but good to see they are doing well.
