The Lib-CON? Have your say on Nick 'the Kingmaker' Clegg.

While everyone suspected we might be heading for a hung parliament in the 2010 General Election, the 25,000 plus Liberal Democrat voters in Redland probably didn't imagine their party of choice would seriously consider working with the Conservatives.

But that is what looks set to happen as Lib Dem leader and 'kingmaker' Nick Clegg talks with Tory leader David Cameron about the way forward.

It's been less than 48 hours since the complete results of the general election and while the Tories were always destined to come out on top as the 'official opposition' in our shameful two-party electoral system, it was widely thought that the Lib Dems would do much better than they did.

No-one expected them to actually lose seats. But they did - ending up with just 57 seats despite almost one in four voters choosing them. Meanwhile, the Tories gained just over 36 per cent of the vote but pulled in a whopping 306 seats. Labour fared better than you'd imagine, with almost 30 percent of the vote and 258 seats.

Confused? Well you're not the only one. Our First Past the Post system is quite hard to stomach and that could be why so many people in Redland voted Lib Dem - due to their commitment to electoral reform.

Bristol West was one of the rare constituencies which bucked the trend to return Lib Dem MP Stephen Williams with a massive majority. In fact, the votes polled by Williams were similar in number to all the other parties put together.

Many left-wing Lib Dem voters could never bring themselves to support the Tories, but may be open to some sort of agreement with the Labour Party. But voters are being left in the dark at the moment, not knowing what is going on in the talks between the leaders.

So what can you do? How about lobbying your Lib Dem MP to express your opinions on any pacts which may be made with the Tories or Labour.

And Redland voters are fortunate enough to be in the constituency of Bristol West, which has a Lib Dem MP. So how about it? Instead of waiting and watching, why not try and influence the decision and contact Mr Williams? What do you reckon. It certainly can't hurt.

I personally can't see how the Lib Dems could work with the Tories, they seem polls (sic) apart. But then, perhaps there's too much water under the bridge with Labour? Perhaps a hung parliament is exactly what democracy needs? Governing issue by issue?

So come on everyone who voted Lib Dem...what do you think?

This is what Stephen Williams MP has to say about the issue on a Facebook campaign page for political reform:

"It's great to read about this demo in Bristol - I met some of the demonstrators in Westminster this afternoon. Can I reassure everyone that we really are holding out for a comprehensive package of political reform, incl but not only the voting system. Talks are at only first base, some way to go yet."

people in this country have no power whatsoever. the only people with any real say are the rich. money talks and all. the only reasons the plum mouthed tories won this was because they have millions of pounds to pour into a campaign and buy the backing of the press. now they are trying to buy the backing of the lib dems and they will probably succeed. we need to follow france where the people have the power not the politicians.

This is a complete and utter joke. Almost everyone I spoke to said they were voting Lib Dem or Green yet we find ourself in this position. It is a sad indictment of our electoral system. I think, without a doubt, we need another election and this time, as djdna says we need to ensure that everyone who wants to vote, can vote. It would have been so easy to get more than one vote by registering at uni and at home. This is so wrong.

Well done Stephen Williams for doubling your majority and well done Ricky Knight for getting more than 2,000 votes. Please come back for the next election (hopefully sooner rather than later) cos if the Lib Dems get into bed with the Tories I will certainly shift my vote to you!

im so pi**ed off with our current system, theres been cases of voter fraud, people not being able to vote and the completely unfair FPTP system ruining libdems chances of victory... personally im voting green as their policies seem best to me... but the first thing we need is proportional representation, i even went to the college green protests where about 100+ people turned up to march

heres a link to the site organising a petition and protests to get PR back into our system! please at least sign the petition! tinyurl.com/34hxpuy
