The family of a popular Bristol chef have said they will not be continuing to run the cafe that was his life.

John ‘The Caff’ Wright, died suddenly last month of a heart attack at the age of 64 and his cafe on Midland Road, Old Market, has been closed ever since.

His daughter, Suzanne has now told the Bristol Evening Post that if the café reopens, it will be under new management because they are going to lease it out.

Suzanne said: “Without dad, it would never be the same again. The whole thing was John’s Café – it was his life. He did the cooking, he was the persona, he loved it.

“It is very strange going in there and he is not there. It would not be right for us to keep it open without him.”

Earlier this month hundreds of people turned out for Mr Wright's  funeral at Canford Lane Crematorium.

Speaking for the first time since his death, Suzanne said: “I am so proud of who he was, and the lives that he touched. That all became very clear on the day of his funeral.

"The stories from staff were amazing – people who worked for him years and years ago were telling us how he changed their lives. I am so proud to be his daughter.

“For us as a family, without dad there is no John’s Café. He always hoped that someone new would come along and breathe new life into it.

"He loved young people – I think he would love someone young to come in and do something of their own with the place.”

She said there were plans to hold one final party in his memory.

If you were a customer, you are invited to leave a message of condolence or a memory on John Wright's Lasting Tribute page.
