After a notable victory in the 2010 general election, the Liberal Democrats managed to hold onto their council seat in Redland.

Bristol City Councillor, Sylvia Jeanne Townsend, staved off stiff competition from Conservative candidate Graham Godwin-Pearson to retain her Redland seat.

She ended up polling more than double that of her rival, with 3,000 votes exactly meaning that almost half of all voters chose the Lib Dems.

The count was announced this afternoon, after the much-awaited news that Lib Dem Stephen Williams had retained his Bristol West seat in parliament.

The Redland vote appeared to buck the national trend with the Lib Dems coming out on top.

Graham Godwin-Pearson led a determined campaign and was a worthy runner up with one in five people voting for him. In third place was the Green Party candidate, Robert Triggs with Helen Sproates for Labour in fourth place.

Turnout was high at more than 75 per cent, which was almost definitely helped out by the general election ballot taking place on the same day.

So it seems that Redland is truly yellow. See http://www.bristol.gov.uk/item/elections/?XSL=main&ShowElectionWard=true&ElectionId=64&WardId=4 for a full roundup.
