A local Redland greengrocer's is closing today after serving its loyal customers for 45 years.

Owner Terry Goad has run the The Redland Fruitery on Lower Redland Road with his family since the 1960s and is now retiring after a lifetime in the retail trade.

The store has a large base of customers, many of whom prefer to shop locally and support independent stores rather than use supermarkets.

The Fruitery has stocked a wide range of fruit and veg and in recent years has branched into supplying organic produce. The shop has specialised in locally grown produce brought in each day from Failand - a journey of four miles. The store was also a pioneer in using zero packaging for its products.

The Fruitery has been a meeting place for members of the local community and provided a personal and friendly service and although the store itself is due to be refurbished, it is unclear what will fill the space left once Redland Fruitery closes today.

Residents can obtain locally sourced fruit and veg in the meantime from the stall in the Woolies Market (pictured) inside the old Woolworths on Whiteladies Road and from the fortnightly farmer's market on the corner of Whiteladies Road and Apsley Road.
