Redland cyclists were given help and advice at a cycle roadshow at the weekend.

The event, organised by Avon and Somerset Police, saw scores of cyclists visit the information stall at the Downs on Friday afternoon.

Experts were on hand to give advice and practical help to cyclists to keep their bikes secure and to cycle safely.

PC Paul White said: "Bristol has recently been voted the UK's cycling city so bike safety is a real issue in the city. There are a lot of cyclists in the area around the Downs so we ran this event to encourage cycle road safety and bike security in the surrounding area."

Cheryl Cole, the local community safety officer from Safer Bristol said: "Bike theft is very common but there is a lot people can do to keep their bikes safe. We are running the roadshow to give cycling commuters and students advice on security and to help them to get their bikes tagged and registered so if they are stolen they can be returned to them."

PC White added: "Responding to concerns from residents at the Stoke Bishop Neighbourhood Forum meeting about bike users cycling without lights and on the pavement, we also used the event to reinforce messages on cycling safely."

Yet another day of watching doe eyed cyclists speed through red lights or veer across traffic. Some of these safety lessons should be compulsory.
