Residents' Parking Zone to Extend into Redland?

Bristol City Council have launched proposals to extend the planned

Residents' Parking Zone from Kingsdown north into parts of Redland.

The

proposed new area would take in the streets around Cotham School and has

been put forward following an earlier consultation on the original

Kingsdown zone, which would cover the area from Stokes Croft to Cotham

Road and Woodland Road in Clifton.

Stressing that the new

proposal is only at a preliminary stage of discussion, local councillor

Neil Harrison says that he recognises that there are "mixed views"

about extending a RPZ into Redland, in contrast to the widespread

support for the scheme in the more southern areas around Dove Street

and Freemantle Square - an area that takes in the BRI and Bristol

University sites.

The original zone, covering Kingsdown and

Cliftonwood, arose following a letter sent to 53,000 households around

the city centre in 2008. The draft proposals include a range of parking

provisions, from resident and visitor-only parking to some pay and

display provision.

Under the Council's proposals, each household would be able to

apply for two residents' permits at an annual cost of £30 for the first

and £80 for the second. In exceptional circumstances, a third permit

could be applied for, at a cost of £200. Low-polluting and electric

cars will be granted their first permit free of charge.

In

addition, each household will be able to apply for up to 100 visitors'

permits per year - the first 50 being free of charge, the second 50

costing £1 each. Businesses within the Zone will pay £100 for a

business permit.

The proposals envisage a limited number of pay and display bays available for people visiting local shops by car.

A map of the proposed RPZ can be seen here

and comments can be made by email to respark@bristol.gov.uk or by

phoning 922 4999.  A final draft proposal is likely in the new year

followed by a formal consultation process on it.

I agree with the resident parking zone extension, the only problem will be the commuters who are driven out will park outside the zone so just moving the problem elsewhere. Bristol needs a Tram system &/or mono rail linking Park & Ride sites now existing & yet to be built ones. Give car owners a reliable cheap alternative & the pollution/congestion problem will be relieved a great deal.
