awards in recognition of their advanced level of studies in maths and
English.
The children, aged between 5 and 15, are all students
at the Redland Kumon Centre and have been added to Kumon's Advanced
Student Roll - a national listing of children who are studying within
their local Kumon centres at an advanced level relative to their school
age.
16 local children received their awards at a ceremony
last Thursday at the Elmgrove Centre on Redland Road where they were presented with
bronze, silver or gold awards depending on how far on the Kumon
programme they had reached.
Double award winner Mia Accevedo-Ferron, of
St Andrews, is pictured with her bronze English award. The 7 year old,
a pupil at St John's School in Clifton, started Kumon 18 months ago and
is currently mastering the construction of complex sentences with
multiple clauses. Mia also received a gold award for her maths studies.
She has recently mastered three-digit column subtraction without
writing down her carries and borrows.
Tomas, a year 7 student
at Cotham School, received a silver ASR award in maths. He recently
came first out of 200 students who took a diagnostic maths test for
students new to secondary school and has been placed on the gifted and
talented list. "This is amazing, considering where he was in January,"
says his father Kevin.
There are currently 80 students attending the Redland Kumon Centre each week.
Centre Instructor Al Shaw says, "It's wonderful to see children
becoming strong students and fulfilling the potential. They've all
worked really hard to achieve these awards."
