Bristol West MP Stephen Williams has become the victim of a Twitter spoof as persons unknown have set up a fake profile of the MP on the micro-blogging site and have started uploading spurious tweets.

The account first appeared on Twitter on Wednesday afternoon with a fairly routine, "just joined twitter...still getting to grips with this!"

Subsequent tweets claiming to be from the LibDem's spokesman on higher education included "could with some luck become the Lib Dem Twitter Czar, this is rather addictive!"

By now, eyebrows were being raised, with Jon Rogers, LibDem Councillor for Ashley Ward, claiming late on Thursday night that the account was fake and laying the responsibility for the prank at the door of the Bristol Labour Party. Labour Party activist Darren Lewis subsequently denied all involvement.

Having spoken this morning with Fi Hance, LibDem councillor for Redland ward and a member of Stephen Williams' support team, Redland People can confirm that Stephen Williams does not have a Twitter account and that the profile still live on Twitter this lunchtime was not created by the MP for Bristol West.

I understand that local LibDems have contacted Twitter and asked for the profile to be removed.

Before that happens, a final sample tweet from the mystery micro-blogger: "Is pleased Paul

Smith will have a seat after the next general election.he can take his

pick from the ones donated to Furniture Reuse Network"
