Get fans out of cars

Somewhere in the archives, maybe in one of Reece Winstone's books, there is a photo of Bishopston's Kennington Avenue.

With a dense queue of people, mostly hatted men, stretching back into the far distant Ashley Down Road and probably beyond.

They are queuing for admission to the Gloucester County Cricket Ground in Nevil Road and will almost certainly have arrived by train to Ashley Hill station.

I'd like to think that some day, David Wood's dream of something similar at Ashton Gate could become a reality but it is unlikely to happen without a convincing incentive to discourage personal transport.

But then again, I have some sympathy with your unnamed correspondent who criticised Bristol City Council's alleged anti-car policy.

It is a difficult situation we have all grown into. Getting out of that mind-set will require either a major act of corporate selflessness or vote-losing legislation.
