I am proud that we help others

I WRITE in response to Reginald King (The Post Oct 16) who bemoans the amount of foreign aid the UK provides while his wife is stuck with poor care in Frenchay Hospital. Firstly, I have great empathy with his wife; the treatment she received is reprehensible (although I have family with great fondness for Frenchay having received a good level of care there) and the matter should go to a tribunal. However, reducing foreign aid is not the answer.
I'm proud that, as a first world country, we are providing much needed assistance to people less fortunate than ourselves.
Having a free healthcare system (for the time being anyway) with free treatment, a bed, food and warmth is a comparative paradise when held against the squalor and poverty that many developing countries have to deal with. We are spoilt in this country and don't appreciate it at all.
If George Osbourne stopped talking about getting tough on tax avoidance and actually did get tough on tax avoidance, the money in the country's coffers would look considerably healthier,
Don't cut aid to those that need it the most.
