A prolific burglar has been sentenced to nine years imprisonment after an incident in which he brandished a knife and threatened his victim.

Brian Mearns, 29, pleaded guilty to the burglary in Muller Road in October 2012 and also a further 14 domestic burglaries across Bristol last year which were taken into account by the Judge.

Mearns appeared at Bristol Crown Court yesterday for sentencing (Thursday 21st February 2013). Due to his late plea, Mearns, who is from Shirehampton, was awarded only a ten per cent reduction on his sentence.

Police Constable James Cassidy said: "This was a particularly distressing incident for the victim. All burglaries can have an emotional impact on victims as well as their financial loss and inconvenience.

"This sentence should send a strong message that we will continue to relentlessly target burglars, place them before the courts and bring them to justice."

If anyone has any information on crime in their area they should contact the police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
